The Lithuanian World Center, established in 1988, serves the social, cultural, and spiritual needs of people of ethnic Lithuanian descent and the community of the Lemont Heritage Corridor.
Today, every Lithuanian knows or has heard of Lithuanian World Center in Lemont. It’s a place where we gather for our Sunday mass; where our children attend Lithuanian schools; where we celebrate the special events of our lives, such as weddings, christenings, anniversaries, and any other family festivities.
The Lithuanian World Center shares its facilities with a wide range of other Lithuanian organizations. The “permanent residents” here are: Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Catholic Mission, Lithuanian Museum of Art, gift shop “Dovana,” 17 condominiums, seven “room and board type” small apartments. There are four halls for banquets, concerts, cultural affairs, and other functions and a large conference room. Two of the halls can be used as gymnasiums suitable for basketball and volleyball. A number of organizations rent space at the center: Lithuanian Foundation, World Lithuanian Community, Lithuanian Scout Association archives, “Ziburelis” Lithuanian Montessori School, Maironis Lithuanian Saturday School, White Pines Academy (a private Catholic school), and “Bravo” catering services. Three American-Lithuanian Folk Dance groups hold their practices here: “Grandis”, “Spindulys” and the “Knights of Lithuania.” Each Saturday three American-Lithuanian boy and girl scout troops hold their meetings and activities at the center. The “Lituanica” basketball team resides here as well.
The Lithuanian World Center’s goal is to provide proper and adequate space for their users. Since most of center’s users exist and operate from donations and nominal tuition, their user fees must be reasonable. To accomplish this, the center always seeks donations and conducts various fund raising events throughout the year.
