Among the articles produced by folk artists, painted Easter eggs are particularly renowned. Like textiles and pottery, they are characterized by colors and intricacy of design.
The Baltic coast is well known for rich deposits of amber which is widely used in jewelry. As far back as the Neolithic age, ritual figurines were made of this material. For many centuries, however, amber was almost neglected by folk artists, and it was not until the 20th century that it became a focal point of Lithuanian folk art. In Palanga, a popular seaside resort, a museum has been established to display the best amber works of professional and folk artists alike.
The Lithuanian folk art with its age-old traditions is as alive today as ever. Thousands of wood carvers, weavers, needle crafters, potters and goldsmiths are engaged in their respective folk art industries. Annual arts and crafts festivals, including contests in which the most skilled participate, are a familiar feature of Lithuanian life.
